Administrators COSMIN Posted 8 hours ago Administrators Posted 8 hours ago VALORANT Patch 12.09 is shaping up to be one of the most important balance updates in recent memory, especially for players tired of getting deleted by Neon shotgun plays. Riot is moving forward with long-awaited nerfs to Neon and shotguns, with the update expected to arrive around May 12 or 13, depending on the region. These changes were reportedly planned for Patch 13.00 at first, but Riot is pushing them earlier due to growing concerns around combat balance and player frustration. VALORANT Patch 12.09 Targets Neon’s Explosive Mobility Neon has been one of the most frustrating Agents to play against because of how quickly she can break normal VALORANT rules. VALORANT is built around positioning, crosshair placement, and punishing risky movement. Neon, however, has been able to use High Gear, bunny hopping, and slide timings to force chaotic fights where defenders often have very little time to react. https://t.co/EDqJloO3Gc— penguin (@penguinVALORANT) May 7, 2026 Riot is directly targeting her aerial movement and resource flow. Jumping while using High Gear will no longer give Neon an airspeed bonus, meaning her sprinting air movement should now match melee speed. Her fuel regeneration on kill will also be limited to when her ultimate is active, while passive regeneration remains unchanged. Riot is also improving visual effects so opponents can better read where Neon is sliding from. How Neon Nerf Impacts Ranked and Pro Play Neon has been warping how rounds feel, especially when paired with aggressive executes and close-range weapons. When an Agent can enter space this quickly while also abusing shotguns, the usual tactical structure of a round starts to fall apart. The Patch 12.09 changes should make Neon players commit more carefully instead of relying on free momentum and constant fuel resets. She will still be fast, but the nerf should make her less oppressive when flying into fights with a Bucky, Judge, or Shorty. Shotguns Are Also Getting Hit Hard in Patch 12.09 Alongside Neon, shotguns are getting a major accuracy and spread pass. The main goal is clear: Riot wants shotguns to be less reliable while moving. This should reduce the strength of running, jumping, and crouch-walking shotgun plays, especially when combined with mobile Agents like Neon and Waylay. The biggest changes affect Bucky, Judge, and Shorty. Bucky is getting a direct pellet damage nerf, while all three shotguns are seeing much harsher movement inaccuracy. Judge and Bucky are also getting increased minimum spread while standing still, making their close-range consistency a little weaker. Its body damage per pellet is dropping from 20 to 17, while its spread is also getting worse in multiple movement states. Other reports also mention that Bucky’s close-range head and leg damage are being reduced as part of the same damage nerfs. Judge and Shorty Nerfs Should Reduce Movement Abuse Judge and Shorty are not getting the same pellet damage reduction as Bucky, but they are still being nerfed through spread and movement accuracy. Judge’s minimum spread is going from 2.25 to 2.5, while both Judge and Shorty are taking heavier penalties when walking, running, crouch-walking, and jumping. Shorty is also getting a fire rate reduction from 3.33 to 3.0, which could make panic double-shots slightly less forgiving. It is still cheap and dangerous in the right corner, but Patch 12.09 should make it less reliable as a movement-based cheese tool. Crouching Accuracy Is Being Standardized Across Shotguns One interesting change is the crouching accuracy multiplier. Crouching will now provide a 15 percent accuracy multiplier across all shotguns. That is technically a small buff for Bucky compared to its previous 10 percent value, but it is a nerf for Judge and Shorty, which previously benefited from a stronger crouch modifier. In practice, this means Riot is trying to make shotgun behavior more consistent across the board. Standing your ground and holding a close angle should still work, but moving wildly while firing should become much less effective. Patch 12.09 Could Slow Down the Current Duelist Meta The current VALORANT meta has heavily rewarded explosive aggression, especially when fast Duelists can force defenders into awkward close-range fights. By nerfing Neon and shotguns at the same time, Riot is clearly trying to bring more tactical structure back into rounds. Initiator and Sentinel Buffs Are Confirmed for Patch 13.00 Riot is not stopping with Neon and shotguns. Broader balance updates for Initiators and Sentinels are confirmed to be coming in Patch 13.00. According to current reports, Riot is still preparing changes around Initiator cooldowns and Sentinel buffs, with the goal of giving teams better tools to punish constant aggression and fast executes. So, while Patch 12.09 looks like the emergency response to Neon and shotgun frustration, Patch 13.00 may be the bigger meta-shaping update. If Riot gets both patches right, VALORANT could move away from nonstop rushdown rounds and back toward a healthier balance between aggression, utility, and positioning.
