Switching CS 1.6 to Legacy (Pre-25th Anniversary) on Steam

Recently, many Counter-Strike 1.6 players noticed that the “normal” Steam version is no longer the classic one, but a new updated build. This happened because Valve released the Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update, a major update that modified the GoldSrc engine — and these changes were automatically applied to CS 1.6 as well. Because of this, the default version behaves differently compared to the old build we all know.

About the Default Version After the Half-Life Update

• The default Steam version of CS 1.6 is the one updated after the “Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update.”
• This update changed the GoldSrc engine, which also altered the behavior of CS 1.6.
• The old, classic version has been archived in a separate branch called steam_legacy – Pre-25th Anniversary Build.
• Many players prefer the legacy version because it keeps the original feeling without the recent changes.
• By using the legacy version, you may avoid bugs and behavioral changes introduced in the new build.

For players who want to use the old build (compatible with classic servers, older AMX plugins, and the original game feel), Valve has made a separate option available in the Betas section, named:

steam_legacy – Pre-25th Anniversary Build

This restores CS 1.6 exactly to the version prior to the Half-Life update.

Steps to Switch to the Legacy Version

1. Open the Steam client and log in if needed.
2. Go to your Library and find “Counter-Strike 1.6.”
3. Right-click the game → Properties…
4. Go to the Betas tab.
5. From the dropdown menu, select steam_legacy – Pre-25th Anniversary Build.
6. Close the window and let Steam download the required files.
7. After downloading, verify file integrity: Properties → Local Files → “Verify integrity of game files…”
8. Launch the game — you are now running the old version.

How to Switch Back to the Normal (Current) Version

1. Repeat steps 1–4 (Library → right-click → Properties → Betas).
2. Select NONE – Opt out of all beta programs.
3. Wait for Steam to download the current version.
4. Verify integrity if needed.
5. Launch the game — you now have the standard build again.

Warnings & Suggestions

• The “steam_legacy” branch may be removed in the future if Valve chooses to discontinue it.
• If it does not appear in Betas, it may be due to region restrictions or a Steam installation issue.
• The legacy version may have incompatibilities with some newer plugins.
• If errors occur, switch back to the normal version or reinstall the game.
